Program Director, Clean Transportation

Energy Independence Now (EIN) is seeking a Program Director for its Clean Transportation Program to oversee its work in the area of alternative fuels and clean vehicle policy in California. The Program Director will be responsible for leading a multi-faceted program at the core of the organization's purpose, and will report to the Associate Director and Executive Director. The position requires analytical ability, cooperation, and a commitment to progressive and innovative problem solving. Based in Santa Barbara, California, the position requires regular travel to Sacramento, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Energy Independence Now is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing innovative, action-oriented solutions to catalyze a rapid transition to a clean, renewable energy and transportation economy in California through policy, advocacy and research. To support our mission, EIN has key expertise in alternative fuels- and advanced vehicles-related issues and has a proven track record on a range of alternative fuel and petroleum reduction related strategies and policies, including development and co-management of the California Hydrogen Highway Initiative, development of a California Renewable Diesel Standard, and active roles in the AB 1007 Alternative Fuels Plan development, California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, California's Zero Emissions Vehicle Program and other cutting-edge alternative fuel and vehicle policies and legislation.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a background in environmental, energy and/or transportation policy analysis and development and the ability to research, review, interpret, and communicate fuel, vehicle, and environmental impact issues. The ideal candidate will have three to five years of related experience and/or an advanced degree; less may be considered.

Responsibilities

Technological Expertise: The candidate will be responsible for working on a full range of alternative fuels and clean vehicle technologies, assessing their economic and environmental implications, technological and commercial readiness, logistical considerations related to their deployment, and development history. The candidate will be responsible for interpreting well-to-wheel (full fuel cycle) analyses of fuels and vehicles as well as issues related to greenhouse gas emissions, criteria and toxic pollutants, and energy-use metrics. Candidates will also be expected to develop a basic understanding of the interplay between commodity markets and alternative fuels and vehicles and correlate news and data from peripheral sectors to alternative fuels and vehicles.

Regulatory and Legislative: The candidate will be responsible for regulatory and legislative activities related to alternative fuels and clean transportation for the organization. The candidate will be expected to develop an understanding of the roles and structure of key California state agencies and departments involved in alternative fuel, vehicle and energy policy including the Air Resources Board, Energy Commission, Department of Food and Agriculture, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Integrated Waste Management Board, and/or the Governor's office.

Collaborative: The candidate will be responsible for collaborating with the state's leading environmental and community organizations active in fuels, vehicle, energy, environmental, and urban planning policies. The candidate will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with these organizations.

Business Sector Relations: The candidate will be responsible for identifying key stakeholders from the business community affected by fuels and vehicle issues and for developing an understanding of the sector's operations, interests, concerns, and stated, implied, and perceived constraints. The candidate will be expected to cultivate productive and, ideally, collaborative relationships with alternative fuel stakeholders including interest groups and associations, auto companies, energy companies, associated technology companies, agricultural companies and trade groups, and other business and trade associations.

Communications and Organizing: The candidate should have excellent writing and editing ability, detailed research habits, strong verbal and presentation skills, and be an effective collaborator. Organizing and outreach skills will also be important for working with stakeholders and partner organizations, particularly a strong ability to work with diverse interests towards a common goal.
